School's out for… skiing!

Planning a ski trip to the Alps over Christmas, New Year, half term or Easter? Choosing the right resort and accommodation can be tricky, so we've selected the best family-friendly ski apartments in France for the school holiday dates.

Christmas

Le Hameau du Kashmir, Val Thorens

Hameau du Kashmir, Val Thorens

If you've decided to head away over Christmas, it's best to choose a high resort to ensure good snow cover. As Europe's highest resort (and with a great range of family-friendly activities on offer throughout the Christmas period, including a Father Christmas Cabin and torchlight descents), Val Thorens is a perfect option. Le Hameau du Kashmir is one of our favourite residences for families in the resort thanks to its spacious and well-decorated apartments, and peaceful ski-in/ski-out location. The apartments are particularly ideal for Christmas breaks as the apartments offer exceptionally well-equipped kitchens, ideal for anyone planning to cook a sumptuous dinner on the 25th of December. Alternatively, if you'd like to eat out, there are two restaurants to choose from in Le Hameau du Kashmir, plus a range of other restaurants throughout the resort.

New Year

L'Ecrin des Neiges, Tignes

Ecrin des Neiges, Tignes

As it's only a week later, it's still wise to pick a relatively high resort in the Alps for New Year ski holidays. With the longest season in France, Tignes offers reliable snow cover throughout the winter season, and it's also a brilliant resort for families. In the highest and most snowsure base village of Val Claret, L'Ecrin des Neiges is a group of lovely self-catering apartments just 100 metres from the slopes. Tignes is known for its New Year's Eve celebrations - the resort hosts a spectacular fireworks display at midnight on the 31st of December, perfect for bringing in the New Year. There is also the famous Pop Rock Party hosted on the slopes in Le Lac from 11pm until 1am, for anyone who wishes to head out to celebrate the bells.

Residence Kalinda in is a group of stylish apartments in Tignes 1800, which is one of the quieter villages of the resort – a perfect base if you have young children who need to go to bed early on the 31st. Or try the other half of the Espace Killy – Chalets du Jardin Alpin offers self-catering apartments in a quiet ski-in/ski-out position in Val d'Isere.

Half Term

Residence La Foret, Flaine

Residence La Foret, Flaine

Being mid-season, the February half term week is the most popular week in the season to go skiing, thanks to reliable snow conditions across resorts in the Alps. However, that means apartments prices are also at their highest, which can make things tricky if you're trying to stick to a budget. However, Flaine is a bit more budget-friendly than many other French ski resorts, in terms of both ski pass and accommodation prices, making it ideal for a half term trip. Plus, it's a brilliant resort for families, with a short transfers from Geneva Airport and a great ski area to suit all levels. Residence La Foret offers great-value modern and comfortable apartments in a good location, just a short walk from the pistes in Flaine Foret.

Easter

Le Village Arc 1950, Les Arcs

While there are generally some heavy snowfalls throughout late March and into April, the warmer weather at the end of the season again means it’s again best to pick a higher resort. Le Village Arc 1950 is a fantastic option for families, as it's a ski-in/ski-out pedestrianised village, with lovely apartments, its own ski school, a kids' club and excellent leisure facilities including indoor and outdoor pools, and a Deep Nature Spa. Plus, there are plenty of events put on for kids to keep them entertained – in previous years the village has hosted Easter egg hunts in April.
