Ever since the Finnish ski area of Yllas decided to build a sauna out of a gondola cabin, several top ski resorts around the world have been trying to out do one another with ever more impressive “gondola experiences.”

The latest contender is launched by Zermatt for the 2010-11 season, Their new VIP gondola is part of the Matterhorn Express lift.

Gone is the era of standing in line waiting for a space in a gondola cabin, instead VIP guests sit in an especially comfortable seat and sip from a glass of chilled champagne while listening to relaxing music and taking in the view before arriving at Trockener Steg.

It’s one of several enhancement for the famous Swiss resort which is open 365 days a year for snow sports (one of only two resorts that is) and operates the continent’s highest lift.

Other new features include a panorama window that is being built in the Matterhorn glacier paradise complex nearly 4,000 metres up at the top of the ski area. The new window provides spectacular views of the Breithorn.

Another new feature is snowmaking on the Furi piste back down to Zermatt which will also have floodlighting installed so that it can be enjoyed for night skiing and boarding too.

And at the end of a long day of riding the VIP gondola, gazing at the stunning view then doing a bit of night skiing, cigar lovers will now have the chance to enjoy a fine Cuban or Dominican cigar in the stylish new Salon Davidoff in the Hotel Mont Cervin Palace. Open daily you’re now able to reserve a private cigar compartment in the Salon’s new humidor.
