Definitely one of the liveliest of the Canadian ski resorts, Banff offers everything from stomping bars and nightclubs to quiet, elegant wine and cocktail bars. But if you’ve been skiing the day at Sunshine you may want to stop off in the Mad Trapper's Saloon (+ 1 403 277 7669) before hitting the road back to Banff. Open to 5pm between the Day Lodge and Strawberry lift it serves up classic ski centre après, including beer and filling food.

Back in downtown Banff the long list of options includes The Bears Den Pub (600 Banff Ave; +1 403 762 4581), serving up locally brewed beers and pub grub until midnight daily. The Paddock Pub (138 Banff Ave; +1 403 760 8543) in the Mount Royal Hotel is a bit more of a casual sports bar complete with big screen TVs, pool table and darts board – it has a reputation for great cocktails. Locally owned Tommy's Neighbourhood Pub (120 Banff Ave; +1 403 762 8888) is a ‘British-style pub’ if you’re feeling homesick (unlikely though that is...) and even serves up fish and chips just like Mum used to make, clearly blissfully unaware that we eat more curries than fish and chips these days.

The Rose & Crown (202 Banff Ave; +1 403 762 2121) is another in the same vein but with a live band on stage every night of the week and more international taste in drink with a menu of shooters, shots, Canadian and international beers and adult hot drinks as well as non-alcoholic mocktails. The raucous Wild Bill’s (named after the legendary Rocky Mountain guide ‘Wild’ Bill Peyto who was originally from Kent), often has live bands and dancing (+1 403 762 0333; wbsaloon.com). The list could go on for pages and pages...
