Resort Attractions
The ice cave carved in to the glacier at the very top of the ski slopes is well worth a visit for that icy wow factor. First created within the Chiaupe glacier, 3417m up on top of Bellecote, the cave consists of a gallery containing several rooms where you can find mammoths and other spectacular statues of ice. A giant bear added for the 2009-10 season is six metres high and weighs an estimated 10 tonnes. As well as visiting the ice cave, a viewing platform nearby gives fantastic views out over the Alps.
Shopping
Shopping is limited to sportswear and equipment in the half-dozen ski shops, food (see grocery shopping) and resort essentials in Les Coches and Montchavin. There is a newsagents (Les Belles Feuilles, Place des Commerces; +33 (0)4 79 07 80 02) and for gifts and souvenirs there’s Les Flocons (Place des Commerces; + 33 (0)4 79 07 83 00).
Montchavin has another gift shop, Le Kabanon (Vieux Village; +33 (0)4 79 08 79 54) as well as a chemist (+33 (0)4 79 07 80 54) but this is definitely not a resort to visit if you like to spend hours touring the shops! However the shopping choice does change dramatically in the few days leading up to Christmas when a popular Christmas Market arrives in resort with a good range of gift stands if you’re lucky enough to be in resort for Christmas, a very special time there. If you miss that market there’s a Lover’s Market just before St Valentine’s Day!
