Resort Attractions

The Aallard Department Store in the Church Square in Megeve village centre, which grew out of a workshop established in the resort in 1926, is an obligatory stop during you stay. It is still owned by the descendents of Armand Allard who is credited with creating the first ever especially designed ski trousers (or “fuseau”) back in 1930. He worked under the guidance of Emile Allais, one of the early greats of ski racing, a local boy too, who won a swathe of medals at successive Olympics and World Championships in the late 1930s. If you’d like to know more about Allais there’s a trail on the mountain dedicated to him with signs along its route giving more information about the life of the great man who is also credited with being the father of French ski technique.

Shopping

A world class destination for shoppers, definitely up there with Aspen and St Moritz and well worth a visit for the shopping alone. If you throw in the restaurants and spas, why bother getting hot and sweaty on the piste at all? An increasingly large number of Megeve’s clientele follow that philosophy and just come to shop.

Of course with 200 places to choose from they could get hot and sweaty just getting round them all anyway but probably not in cool designer outlets like Hermes, Lacoste, Prada, Escada and Versace – these are mostly concentrated in the fashionable Village square boutiques. For quirky antique shops the best area is along rue Saint-Fancois. The resort also has its own parfumeries creating local blends and the Joly-Pottuz family jewellery business which has seen several generations of some of the world’s best jewellers keep shop.

Of course you will find the more regular ski resort services- the newsagents, chemist, photographic store and souvenir shops. Megeve will not leave shopaholics wanting.
