As with most aspects of life in Serre Chevalier, the diverse nature of its resort villages means that none is big enough for a particularly large nightlife scene to gel, the 30 or so bars are mostly spread between the four main bases. On the other hand there are several lively bars at each of the centres so you can pass an enjoyable evening in any, and there’s even a casino in Briancon.

In Villeneuve the Scottish bar/French restaurant combo Le Frog (+33 (0)4 92 24 71 51; le-frog.fr) and the White Hare Bar in the Hotel Liève Blanc, once an old coaching inn, are perennial favourites with Brits (they’re British run) and you’ll also find late night dancing here. Chantemerle has the Sullivan, offering over 20 types of beers. Wherever you choose to spend the evening remember to sample the local Bière des Alpes brewed in a local brewery run by the region’s Olympic racing champion Luc Alphand and his brother.
