Overview of The Canyons Ski Resort
Canyons ski resort is the new ‘big name’ in American skiing. Little known before 2000, it has grown to offer one of the biggest ski areas in the USA, served by a fleet of high-speed lifts. One of the most exciting ski resort developments in North America of the 21st century. Located next to the vibrant – and exceptionally easy to access – world famous ski town of Park City in Utah, it developed from a small local’s hill through four name changes and three ownership changes within 15 years to become one of the biggest ski areas in the US.
The little ski hill of Park West was overlooked by most international guests until 1997 who headed instead to the neighbouring areas of Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort – both included in a joint lift pass for international guests to Canyons. Then with the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics looming Park West was bought by the American Skiing Company, at the time one of the largest ski resort operators in the world managing a dozen ski areas from coast to coast. Unlike the other large existing ski resorts it bought and just carried on running, it decided to grow Park West in to one of North America’s top destinations, calling it first Wolf Mountain and then the Canyons. New owners took over a few years ago, investing in more new lifts and many other improvements and dropping the ‘The’ from Canyons in the name.
Other than being all shiny and new, huge and a few minutes away from one of the planet’s best ski towns and with a lift pass covering two other world class ski areas each a short drive away it’s also worthy of note that Canyons is one of the quickest and easiest ski areas to reach – a very short hop from Salt Lake City International Airport.
