Shopping

A year round resort town with a population approaching 10,000, Steamboat has about 100 shops to service both visitors and the local population. Most of the shops are in downtown Steamboat Springs but there are several small malls at the base of the mountain too. In either case Steamboat is a five star destination for those who like to spend time shopping for more than just essentials.

Around half of these are clothing and/or ski shops, but you’ll also find half a dozen antique shops, several book stores, a dozen art galleries, toy shops, music stores, quite a few florists, half-a-dozen jewellers, regular town type furniture and electrical stores and then about 30 gift shops of one kind or another.

Along with the mainsteam stptes the town has many interesting and quirky gift stores, far too many to list in fact. However a small selection can include the Hayden Artisans' Marketplace (144 Walnut Street Hayden; +1 (970) 276-2019) which is a kind of workers co-operative of local artists and craftspeople. Or there’s the excellent wind powered Epilogue Book Company (837 Lincoln Avenue; +1 (970) 879 2665).

And no visit to Steamboat Springs is complete without a look in F. M. Light and Sons (830 Lincoln Ave., +1 (970) 879 1822) which has been ‘outfitting the West’ for more than a century and through five generations of the family. This is still the place to buy your cowboy hat and everything else besides. The shop sells 6,200 cowboy hats a year including their signature Billy Kidd Stetson.
