Although it is quite a trek for British families to get to Heavenly, the resort does have a lot of advantages for families, not least the ease and affordability of feeding the troops in a plethora of family friendly establishments all desperate for your business. Ironically perhaps some of the best family dining is in the casinos where you can all eat much more for much less than in an equivalent restaurant back home; you may find taking your children in to a casino a little challenging however. Having said that, Harvey’s does have a ‘Family Fun Centre’ though.
So overall families can have a great time on a Heavenly ski holiday if they plan ahead. It’s more important than at many resorts to check the location of your ski hotel or condo in regards to your needs accessing the slopes or other facilities, and a car is a definite advantage if you don’t want to be walking a lot or relying on shuttle buses. The scale of South Lake Tahoe and the plethora of adult attractions may be off-putting for some families, and indeed those with older teens may fear they’ll end up getting married in one of the casino wedding chapels (OK, perhaps a tad unlikely…), but on the upside the canny family can holiday well by just taking advantage of all the facilities that there are here.
As well as the great facilities for families on the mountain, you at least don’t face the problem of finding a shop with baby milk formula or nappies at 9pm here or an affordable family restaurant that’s actually open at 6pm here as is often the case at smaller and more obviously ‘family friendly’ resorts in the Alps.
On the slopes Heavenly Day Care (+1 (775) 586 7000) accepts children aged from two months to four years but there are only 30 places available so advance reservation is essential if you’re going to rely on this service. The resort’s ski school has a huge range of children’s programmes starting from age four with the high standards and fun you’d expect, and full or part day classes, with or without lunch, available.
Besides skiing and boarding, Adventure Park has fun sliding activities including tubing, and the base village has a modern 8 screen cinema multiplex and an ice skating rink.
