Apres ski in Megeve is largely a refined affair with more cafes and cocktail bars than rowdy pubs. Georges in the Hôtel Mont-Blanc typifies this serving only exceptional champagnes and fine delicacies in a timeless atmosphere of elegance and refinement.

Back in more usual ski resort territory however, when the lifts close there is usually a crowd in one or two of the bars at the base of the slopes. In Jaillet’s case it’s usually the 540 Café (905 route du jaillet; +33 (0)4 50 58 92 78), situated at the bottom of the Jaillet cable car and boasting a large south facing terrace.

Top choices in town include Le Wake Up (Route Edmond de Rothschild; +33 (0)4 50 58 78 70), La Caleche (Place de l’eglise; +33 (0)4 50 58 99 13) and Le White Pearl (Rue Ambroise Martin; +33 (0)4 50 58 78 70). Later on there’s a small casino (casino-megeve.com) and several night clubs including the Palo Alto (199 rue Charles Feige; +33 (0)4 50 93 01 83; palo-alto.fr) which is definitely a place to be seen. The Cosmopolitan Bar (Rte Ed. de Rothschild; +33 (0)4 50 21 09 91) is open to 5am so you can start queuing for the first lift of the day just after you leave. The 5 Rues Jazz Club (which often has live music from other genres too) is a perennial favourite.
